About

Background:

The Cataloging Policy and Practice Working Group, CPP, has existed since 2019. It started as an internal RAD Program cataloging team to increase understanding of and build documentation for local cataloging policy and practice. In 2020, with the library reorganization and the formation of the Metadata Services Program (MS Program), the group was expanded to be open to any interested library faculty or staff member. Discussions continue to center on cataloging, metadata stewardship, and governance for operational areas assigned to the Program.

Purpose:

The purpose of the Cataloging Policy and Practice Working Group is to provide a regular meeting to discuss and set metadata policy and practice for work carried out within the operations of the MS program. This group contributes to the overall program's goal of improving the integrity and consistency of metadata practice for the Libraries, working as is helpful with the Metadata Community of Practice.

Scope:

The working group's scope is MS Program cataloging policy and practice. While issues related to metadata policy and practice for other operational areas, e.g., archival processing, discovery management, digital production, etc. are welcome for the purpose of sharing, coordination or collaboration, responsibility for setting metadata practices lies with each administrative, operational unit and any organization-wide considerations requested by the Metadata Community of Practice.

General Goals:
To raise issues related to MS Program cataloging and metadata policy and practice to ensure common understanding and improve consistency in practice.
To set policy and practice for the MS Program’s cataloging and metadata.
To document MS Program cataloging and metadata policy and practice through notes, policy and practice documents and meeting recordings
To openly share documentation related to the work of the MS Program. Policies and meeting minutes and recordings are posted on the Metadata Services employee portal page.
