This unit serves the Libraries' by processing physical scholarly resources added to the Libraries' collection in support of teaching, learning and research. Paula locates appropriate bibliographic records, prepares or updates local holdings records, and performs complex record editing to improve and enhance bibliographic data according to national and local cataloging standards. Paula also provides original cataloging for ETDs in science and engineering, contributes name authority records to the LC/NACO authority file, and submits literary author call number proposals to the Library of Congress.

Advisor to the Dean 284E Hesburgh Library (574) 631-5796 06/20/2018 Alicia Bates, Ed.D., joined the Hesburgh Libraries as the Advisor to the Edward H. Arnold Dean, Hesburgh Libraries and University of Notre Dame Press in September 2022. As de facto chief of staff, Dr. Bates advises and supports the Dean in all aspects of the administrative and executive operations of the Hesburgh Libraries and University of Notre Dame Press. Her responsibilities include advising the Dean about and managing relationships and activities within the Hesburgh Libraries and for myriad stakeholders; serving as a conduit between the Office of the Dean and external University stakeholders; managing special organizational- and University-level projects on the Dean’s behalf; and collaborating to lead, manage, and assess the Hesburgh Libraries’ strategic framework process. Bates has more than a decade’s worth of experience in higher education through expanding roles that have developed her expertise in several areas including strategic planning, assessment, leadership training, University partnerships, and stakeholder engagement. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Campus Activities where she helps to lead association strategy, establish educational priorities, and promote student learning and staff development.

Digital Repositories Librarian 271G Hesburgh Library (574) 631-9145 07/01/2023 Kate Blalack is a librarian, and a nationally certified archivist and digital archives specialist. She joined the Hesburgh Libraries as the Digital Repositories Librarian in July 2023. She brought with her 20 years of experience in various roles of librarianship, including academic, public, archival, and museum settings. Kate currently serves as a teacher and mentor and is passionate about creative innovation and human connections. Her research is primarily focused on social connections through technology, in the areas of international human relations, artificial intelligence, and neurodiversity. With a service-first approach, Kate serves as a collaborative team leader and is responsible for advancing the Hesburgh Libraries’ overall strategy for the management, discovery, and integration of digital collections and assets through HL digital collections platforms, including the institutional repositories and the digital exhibit systems. She serves as a cooperative link between various library units and has primary authority to guide the development of a successful, interoperable ecosystem of tools that support and showcase our collections; to leverage repository services to enable and support a robust and sustainable scholarly communications ecosystem; and to advance multiple and equitable modes of access to the Libraries’ repository-based collections. She also leads stakeholder communications and workflow development and provides guidance in the digital advancement of the Hesburgh Libraries. She is the subject specialist for American history, American Studies, journalism, and Gender Studies. She has an undergraduate degree from Valparaiso University; an MTS in religion from Harvard Divinity School; an MS in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and PhD in American history from the University of Iowa.

Interim Team Lead 102 Hesburgh Library (574) 631-1952 02/01/2022 Greg Bond is a member of the Library Faculty at Hesburgh Libraries. He serves as the Curator of the Joyce Sports Research Collection and the Sports Archivist. He has appointments at both Rare Books and Special Collections and at the University of Notre Dame Archives. He received his PhD in American History from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an MLS with concentrations in Archives and in Digital Libraries from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research interests include the cultural history of sports, the history of race and sports, the history of African Americans and sports, and the history of gender and sports. He is currently working on several research projects about the history of African American athletes at predominantly white colleges and universities. His research and writing has appeared in scholarly journals and in popular publications. He has experience with a variety of historical/archival methods including oral history projects, digital library projects, and public history projects. He encourages incorporating and including the Hesburgh Libraries’ unparalleled sports archival collections in the classroom. She handles post-processing of materials from two of our outsourcing vendors. Rachel also creates and updates name authority records for the LC/NACO authority file and submits literary author call number proposals to the Library of Congress. Rachel is a member of the Metadata Initiatives Unit of the Metadata Services Program.

Manager 161B Hesburgh Library (574) 631-3993 05/26/1998 As manager of the Reserves & Interlibrary Loan Services Unit within the Teaching, Research & User Services Program, Sheila manages and coordinates course reserve requests for print and electronic resource delivery to Notre Dame students, staff and faculty in accordance with university guidelines on fair use and copyright. Processes materials for reserve in the integrated library system, orders books and videos not owned by the library, tracks orders to ensure material is available before deadlines, scans print materials, troubleshoots issues that arise with course reserves and streaming services, and updates item statuses as needed across multiple platforms. As manager of the Interlibrary Loan Services Unit, Sheila is responsible for the day-to-day management of lending requests for both print and electronic resource sharing using a variety of systems. Problem solves issues such as scan quality, citation errors, copyright limitations, licenses on e-resources, shipping, and billing. Sheila hires, coaches and trains staff in the Reserves and ILL Lending Unit and coordinates and improves workflows to provide consistent service levels for Reserves and ILL lending while also strengthening resource sharing relations. Arnold Dean after serving in an interim capacity for nearly three months. Ms. Budak’s primary responsibilities include managing the dean’s appointment calendar and travel arrangements, working with the Advisor to the Dean to help manage executive projects and priorities, and working with the communications director to help develop and distribute executive communications. With her appointment in February 2022, Budak became a member of the Hesburgh Libraries Executive Team, the first time that the Senior Administrative Assistant has been a member of the Libraries’ senior management team. Prior to joining the Hesburgh Libraries she worked in Notre Dame’s Office of Institutional Equity.

Barb is responsible for acquiring a wide range of requested materials, including print monographics and electronic books. Additionally, Barb manages the receipt process for these materials.

Associate University Librarian 284C Hesburgh Library (574) 631-3092 08/13/2001 Mark Dehmlow has spent more than 25 years working in higher education technology across several functions; he became the associate university librarian for the Digital Strategies and Technology division at the Hesburgh Libraries in August 2023. As chief of the Digital Strategies and Technology division, Dehmlow serves as the Hesburgh Libraries' chief technology officer, managing a division that specializes in library applications, web and software engineering, support and solutions analysis, enterprise systems, and digital scholarship. He leads diverse and talented teams to develop and sustain effective technological and pedagogical solutions that advance teaching, learning, and research. In his role, Dehmlow partners with both library and campus stakeholders to make key service and resource decisions and solve multi-faceted, enterprise-wide problems. Strategic threads throughout Dehmlow’s experience have been his commitment to a cohesive, intuitive user experience, robust cross-organizational collaboration, and technology advancement in alignment with library and institutional goals. Since joining Notre Dame and the Hesburgh Libraries in 2001, Dehmlow has held several management and leadership roles in the web, software, information technology, and digital services arenas of the research library. Prior to joining the Hesburgh Libraries, Dehmlow worked at the University of Maine in the University IT services and in the Fogler Library. Dehmlow’s 25 years of publishing and professional service have earned him a national and international network of research library and technology colleagues. He formerly sat on the International Group of Ex Libris Users steering committee, is a member of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Information Discovery and Interchange Leadership Committee, and serves as the president of the Academic Libraries of Indiana. His University service work includes University Council for Academic Technologies Subcommittee on Academic Software, Smart Storage Program, Campus Wireless Planning Committee, Campus IT Governance, and Academic IT Directors. Most recently, Dehmlow was a member of the Hesburgh Libraries Strategic Planning Liaison Team which developed the libraries’ new strategic framework. Dehmlow earned bachelor of the arts degrees in mathematics and English with concentrations in comparative literature and creative writing from the University of Maine, as well as a master of science degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois. Also, he supports reference and research services for a variety of administrative departments and academic offices, faculty, scholars and local, national, and international production companies.

In this role, he promotes library services and engages diverse audiences by finding the spark in each story to increase impact and drive traffic. Bryan communicates key initiatives, signature events, and valuable resources to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the larger community through multiple channels, including social media, digital signage, and other digital media. Bryan works with the larger communications team to elevate the libraries’ brand and advance its mission and vision. Before joining Notre Dame, Bryan worked in healthcare marketing at Beacon and Saint Joseph Health Systems, where he created and published content across all channels for external and internal audiences. In this role, he is responsible for providing leadership and consultative services regarding how the library can take advantage of web based technologies, while managing a highly skilled team of software developers and specialists in the areas of design, user experience, analysis and change management. As a member of the CER Unit, Maggie contributes to the daily print serials operations including check-in, claiming, and title changes. Digital Projects Specialist 250B Hesburgh Library (574) 631-3371 07/28/2008 As Digital Projects Specialist (DPS), Adam contributes significantly to the development, creation, supervision, planning, and ongoing management of digital collections within the Hesburgh Libraries. The Digital Projects Specialist reports to the Supervisor for the Navari Family Center for Digital Scholarship. Adam provides oversight for the development of three-dimensional services, including 3D printers, software modeling and evaluation of applications that emerge in support of the 3D field as the technologies apply to strategic initiatives within the Libraries. Adam also provides instructional outreach service/course integration as well as workshops and instruction on 3D modeling and other visual software applications, including VR. Joining Notre Dame in 2021 as a leader in the Center for Social Concerns Justice Education program, Amber served as both an instructor and program administrator on topics ranging from educational equity and community health to sustainability and climate action. Before her time at Notre Dame, she worked with L'Arche International as a creative producer in Italy, Ukraine, Poland, Japan, India, Australia, Kenya, Argentina, Honduras, Canada, Côte d'Ivoire, and Northern Ireland. Associate University Librarian 284D Hesburgh Library 09/01/2016 Erika Hosselkus has spent more than a decade working in the academic core of higher education; she became the associate university librarian for the Scholarly Resources and Services division in August 2023. As chief of the Scholarly Resources and Services division, Hosselkus leads Hesburgh Libraries’ largest division of faculty and staff. Her portfolio includes research collections, special collections and archives, public and user services, metadata, and preservation. She oversees partnerships and services that support Notre Dame’s commitment to providing an elite undergraduate education, its growing emphasis on rigorous graduate education, and research on and beyond campus. Prior to her associate university librarian appointment, Hosselkus served as strategic planning implementation project manager and special collections curator for Latin American, Iberian, and Latino/a collections. She is also a fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies. Hosselkus joined Notre Dame Hesburgh Libraries in 2016 as a Rare Books and Special Collections curator, developing a world-class Latin American collection for this fast-growing area of study. Since then, she has taken on expanded roles in the Libraries and created partnerships in teaching and learning across campus. She has collaborated with Notre Dame faculty to connect students with rare books and manuscripts and teaches courses on Spanish paleography and the history of collecting. She has also curated several major physical and digital exhibitions of Latin American and early modern European materials, making Hesburgh Libraries’ distinctive collections accessible to campus and a global research community. She served on the University Committee on Women Faculty and Students and, most recently, was a member of the Hesburgh Libraries Strategic Planning Liaison Team, which developed the Libraries’ new strategic framework. Before joining Notre Dame, Hosselkus served as an associate professor of history with tenure and coordinator of Graduate Studies and Latin American Studies at Southeast Missouri State University. Hosselkus holds a Ph.D. in history and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Tulane University. Her current research interests include strategic planning in academic research libraries, the development of print culture in colonial Latin America, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century histories of collecting and exhibiting. She also works collaboratively to create and provide updates to the record retention and disposition schedules as well as builds consultation services for the records management program and manages the paper-based shred program. Meserve previously served as senior director of academic space in the office of the provost. From 2015–21, she was associate dean for the humanities and faculty affairs in the College of Arts and Letters. A historian of the Italian Renaissance, Meserve studies the history of book printing, humanist culture, and the papacy in the 15th and 16th centuries. She is the author of the award-winning Papal Bull: Print, Propaganda, and Politics in Renaissance Rome (Johns Hopkins, 2021), which surveys how the popes used the printing press to publish news, propaganda, and disinformation in the early decades after Gutenberg. Her previous book, Empires of Islam in Renaissance Historical Thought (Harvard, 2008), surveyed how Renaissance historians accounted for the rise and fall of Islamic empires, especially that of the Ottoman Turks. She is currently working on a multivolume translation of the Commentaries of Pope Pius II, the only pope ever to write his autobiography while sitting on the papal throne, based on manuscripts in the Vatican Library and Biblioteca Corsiniana in Rome. At Notre Dame, she teaches courses on the Italian Renaissance, the history of Rome, and the history of the book. Meserve earned her B.A. in Classics at Harvard and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Renaissance history from the Warburg Institute of the University of London. She served for two years as a curator in the Incunabula Section of the British Library in London. She has won fellowships from the NEH, ACLS, and the Newberry Library in Chicago and is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome.

Data Integrity Specialist 402T Hesburgh Library (574) 631-4631 10/01/1984 As a member of the Metadata Technologies & Design Unit of the Metadata Services Program, Lisa's primary responsibility is to analyze and improve the quality of the Libraries' metadata assets. She works with data in the Integrated Library System, Discovery System, and other related systems. Her role involves designing the best approach to address and resolve issues, applying specialized knowledge of metadata standards to ensure that new and existing data meets requirements, and determining priorities for addressing integrity issues in consultation with stakeholders. She is also the product owner for OCLC Connexion and provides support to about 50 library users.

Her areas of interest include linked data, Wikidata, ethical metadata practice, digital humanities, and their intersection with theological librarianship. As a graphic designer, Andy is responsible for creating professional design elements, color schemes, and branding components for a wide variety of sites that the library promotes for use in the academy.
