Matthew Knight is the Irish Studies Librarian and Curator at the University of Notre Dame. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2021, and his dissertation, “Our Gaelic Department: The Irish-Language Column in the New York Irish-American,1857-1896,” and much of his recent scholarship, explores the efforts to preserve and cultivate the Irish language in 19th -century America. His book, Dion Boucicault: The Vampire (1852) and The Phantom (1873) was published in 2024 and he is currently working on a monograph exploring the Irish language in the 19th -century American popular press.
